WORK: Blending our Passions and Skills

It's exciting to use this prompt from The High Calling -- Your Work Matters to God -- to write this piece. My work definitely matters to God, because He has been the One writing the "job description" for it for years now.

I'll begin with when I became a mother 18 years ago. In a "Momma's Home" journal I wrote during that time on CelebratingChildren.com, I said:
"It certainly wasn’t an overflow of money that made the stay-at-home mom decision easy for me. The way I see it, it could only have been a deep faith that gave me confidence that this was just what I was supposed to do and that it would work out precisely as God had designed it to."
Once my son, Caleb, was in middle school, another role was added to my job description, one that started out as "Yoga Teacher" but was amended by God to "Stretch & Relax Teacher" five years later.

Back in 2005, I had quickly fallen in love with the mindful exercises of yoga and the way I could FEEL Jesus' presence on my mat during classes I attended.

My passion for this practice led me to a 200-hour yoga teacher training that opened up various exciting teaching opportunities for me, working in schools, wellness studios, and even a senior facility.

My passions and skills worked together so harmoniously when I worked on a part-time basis at the Christian-owned Life's Journey Wellness Center. There, I taught yoga classes and was the studio's writer, editor, and community liaison.

Until...

One day, as I sat on my couch pondering if I was going to commit to a 500-hour yoga teacher training program from a Christian perspective, I felt a nudge from God. The message: it was important to Him for me to continue sharing good-feeling exercises with the community, but I didn't need to do that under the "umbrella" of yoga.

I thought this feeling might pass. The next morning, it was still there. I needed help processing it, so I contacted Pastor Mike Shreve, a stranger to me at the time. Years ago, I had read about why he suddenly cancelled all of his yoga classes to hundreds of students at four universities in Tampa, Florida.

Pastor Shreve told me that while he couldn't tell me what to do, because that was God's job, he could help me sort through the process.

Not much later, I stopped teaching yoga and resigned from my other roles at the wellness center that were connected to it. And, that stopped my consistent paycheck. Still, I was at peace. I knew God must have had a plan. He did.

First, God sent the name "ZoeHygiea" (which means "Life & Health") to Coach Grayson Marshall to pass on to me for my new model of teaching that would include readings from "Jesus Calling" with the emphasis of exercising and relaxing in His Presence.

Classes began opening up for me in unexpected ways. With each new client came tremendous testimonies about results they were getting: physically, emotionally, and spiritually.

"You are helping me to wake up to my own body," says a private client healing from two hip-replacement surgeries. He couldn't get down on the floor to stretch when we first began working together. Now, he can.

"I always feel better after you've been here," an Anglican priest healing from a stroke states to me. "His balance is better, his gait is better, and his confidence is through the roof," his wife explains.

Against the backdrop of a gorgeous river view, a refreshed participant at the Wednesday morning women's class I teach, exclaims, "This IS your calling!"

POETRY: Birthday Poem for Cousin Johnette

Sitting here the night before my cousin's birthday
Pondering just what to say
I invite the Holy Spirit
To write for me today

My birthday gift is expressed through a poem
To my beautiful cousin Johnette
Living in Bermuda
Our native home

What to say about a woman so dear
Who takes time out
To let family and friends know
How much she cares

A woman of God is who she is
A child of the King
Undoubtedly His!

Anointed and Faithful
Loving and Kind
A jewel in His crown
God always on her mind

In her heart
In her soul
In her words
True and Bold

Kingdom Worker
Faithful and Strong
Gifted in spiritual understanding
Her life is a living-for-God song

To her today
I am honored to say
Johnette, I love you dearly
Have a Happy Birthday!

Love Always,

Cousin Penny

Gifts from God: Are we using them for His Higher Purposes?

The subject of "Gifts from God" is strongly on my mind and in my heart this morning. Perhaps it's at the forefront of my thinking right now because of a comment my son made yesterday after I read a passage aloud (to myself) about a certain type of gift given from God. From another room my teen was in at the time, he called out: "ALL our gifts come from God."

Indeed, they do!

"4Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are varieties of services, but the same Lord; and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who activates all of them in everyone. To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. To one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom, and to another the utterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, 10 to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another the discernment of spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. 11 All these are activated by one and the same Spirit, who allots to each one individually just as the Spirit chooses." 1 Corinthians 12:4-11

So, this morning, I've been thinking about just how intricate God is with the orchestration and giving of our gifts -- "who allots to each one individually just as the Spirit chooses."

Need an example of how the Master Architect works? Just think about the structure of the body for a moment. Incredibly mind-blowing on one level, but yet simple on another, right? I mean...take care of all of that intricacy, and it will work well. Abuse it, and it will break down. I'm thinking this is the same with our gifts.

Use them to edify the body of Christ, and they will work according to His plan. Don't use them to build up the body of Christ, and then one can't help but wonder if such gifts are merely being used in vain.

"Now concerning spiritual gifts, brothers and sisters, I do not want you to be uninformed. You know that when you were pagans, you were enticed and led astray to idols that could not speak. Therefore I want you to understand that no one speaking by the Spirit of God ever says, 'Let Jesus be cursed!' and no one can say 'Jesus is Lord' except by the Holy Spirit." 1 Corinthians 12:1-3

A writing on ehow.now, says: "Jesus exhibited many of the spiritual gifts, such as the gifts of healing (Matthew 4:23), prophecy (Revelation 19:10), and performing miracles (Acts 2:22). According to the Bible, Jesus said that anyone with faith in him will do the same things that he did, including even greater things (John 14:12). This implies Jesus' authorization of spiritual gifts. Jesus' words were true for many of the apostles, including Paul (Acts 19:11) and Peter (Acts 3:1-10)."

Every so often, I like to pause and evaluate, via communication with my Creator, if I am using what He has given me according to His specific design. Since I absolutely do not want to put my own spin on gifts allotted to me from Him, I strive to make it a point to check in with Him about all of this. "Am I using what I believe are my gifts in the way You designed, Lord?" I often ask. "Does what I do build up the body of Christ?"

"All things are lawful, but not all things are beneficial. All things are lawful, but not all things build up.....do everything for the glory of God." 1 Corinthians 10:23-24, 31.

Those who attend my ZoeHygiea "Strech, Strengthen & Relax" classes know I have a passion for aiming to assist others, through moving the body and relaxing it, to intimately feel the Presence of Christ. The higher purpose of my class is: To feel His presence, and heal in It. Spiritually, this is what has most meaning to me, and I do believe this is one of the ways God has gifted me.

A ZoeHygiea client of mine who is a busy business owner, recently said to me, "You are teaching me to take time to slow down and just sit with God and simply enjoy what He has given me, and that is making such a difference."

During a part of my prayer-and-listening time this morning about this matter, that client's comment came to mind, which I believe God used as an answer to let know me I am using my gifts in a way He designed. The thought gave me watery eyes, another way I believe He communicates and confirms things with me. :-)

Many will agree that we didn't simply get blessed with gifts just to unwrap and use just whatever we feel like it, like the way we operate with many of our material gifts. With His intricate ways, we clearly don't need to be rocket scientists to know that we have been gifted for great purpose and, therefore, need to first seek Him about direction for and application of these gifts.

1 Corinthians 12:27-31, teaches: "27 Now you are the body of Christ and individually members of it. 28 And God has appointed in the church first apostles, second prophets, third teachers; then deeds of power, then gifts of healing, forms of assistance, forms of leadership, various kinds of tongues. 29 Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Do all work miracles? 30 Do all possess gifts of healing? Do all speak in tongues? Do all interpret? 31 But strive for the greater gifts. And I will show you a still more excellent way."

May we walk in our Greater Gifting for His Glory! Here is a wonderful article with a guide to help us determine our spiritual gifts.

In His Love,

Penny

STRETCH: Are you stretching your strong back?

"Do you work out?" the massage therapist asked me yesterday as she massaged my back.

"Yes, I do," I replied.

"Your back is strong; you have the strongest, most relaxed back I've seen here in a long time," she said as she tapped on the massage table.

Well, that description of my back made my day! :-) Strong AND RELAXED!

Sounds like my at-home Beachbody® workouts combined with the Zoehygiea "Stretch & Relax" classes I teach are blending well. Glad the therapist saw both sides of the equation regarding my back, because there are many cases of 'strong and tight' backs -- as in not stretched out after working out.

You are not getting the "full meal" if you're only doing cardio and weights and leaving out the stretching component, says Tony Horton, creator of the various P90X™ workouts. And, I do love his obvious understanding of the IMPORTANCE of stretching that is evident in the version I have: P90X3™.

While a 10-minute stretch at the end of a cardio or weight-training session is far better than nothing at all, to me, there's nothing quite like a dedicated class that focuses on relaxing the muscles and stretching the fascia, etc. The combination of 'Stretching AND Relaxing' just puts any workout into good balance for me. Really grateful that this piece of the puzzle resonates with me the way it does.

So, don't forget to S-T-R-E-T-C-H, because isn't a strong muscle that can't stretch pretty much a muscle that's only half cooked, half juiced, half blended (or whatever way you want to term it)? :-)

Enhancing Health: Barefoot on Morning Grass

By 7:08 this morning, I felt as though I had been "washed" from the feeling of my bare feet standing on wet grass along with the cool early-morning temperature on my skin and the beautiful view of the 7:00 a.m. sky. There, I stood on my front grass basking in this feeling that I know only God could provide. In the October 23rd devotional of Jesus Calling, I had read: "...Let my gold-tinged Love wash over you and soak into the depths of your being..." And this is EXACTLY what it felt like was happening to me during my outdoors time.

So, what got me out on the grass in the first place while it was still dark outside?

Well, as I settled in for my morning devotional that began with this line in Jesus Calling -- "As you turn your attention to Me, feel the Light of My Presence shining upon you," I turned my head to the right, and as I glanced through the living room window I could see some light beaming through the trees, light from a tall street lamp. Something about the view made me want to just place my whole body outdoors. So, in tank top, pajama bottoms and bare feet, I proceeded outdoors, enjoying the immediate cleansing feeling of the cool air on my skin. Then, when I stepped on the wet grass, the obvious feeling of more deep freshness moved through my body. I lifted my arms and head up for a morning ZoeHygiea stretch and then captured this shot:

The outdoors stretch felt so good that it led to another, and I visualized a morning stretch experience with a small group of friends on my grass. How wonderful that would feel, I thought, to be stretching with friends -- outdoors and barefoot -- at this time of morning. I also smiled at the thought of me daring my cousin, Kathy, who doesn't like to walk barefoot too much, to stand and run out on the grass with me. I imagined the giggles we'd get from that. :-)

After getting a lovely dose of outdoors connection with God, I returned inside to continue with my devotional reading. But, since I wanted to repeat that feeling I had just received from standing barefoot on the wet grass, I returned outdoors once again. This time, my stretching included bending forward and also placing my hands on the morning dew, which certainly added to this invigorating feeling while giving me a yummy back stretch.

Next, I walked to the edge of the grass and decided to check my mail box (which had not been done yesterday), so I stepped off the grass and onto the pavement of the cul-de-sac; that provided the feeling of a foot massage. Mmmm! I walked across the wet grass again and eventually made my way back indoors and back to today's reading of Jesus Calling and John 17 and Psalm 16:11:

"As you turn your attention to Me, feel the Light of My Presence shining upon you. Open your mind and heart to receive My heavenly smile of approval. Let my gold-tinged Love wash over you and soak into the depths of your being. As you are increasingly filled with My Being, you experience joyous union with Me. I in you, and you in Me. Joy-in-Me and My Joy-in-you become intertwined and inseparable. I suffuse your soul with Joy in My Presence; at My right hand there are pleasures forevermore."

So, did you know that some doctors advise morning barefoot-walking on the grass for enhancing health?

SOY SCENTS: The Non-Toxic Candle You'll be Glad You Lit

By 7:00 this morning, I had the large version of Soy Scents' "Spiced Eggnog" candle aglow in my kitchen. "Enjoy its scent before you leave for school," I said to my son. "It'll uplift all your senses!" I mean, who doesn't enjoy the sweet-smelling aroma of a candle, right? And, I just can't imagine who wouldn't want a candle that is:

~ non-toxic and biodegradable
~ ideal for folks with breathing problems
~ made from 100% soybeans, so burns cooler, cleaner, and 40% longer than typical paraffin candles
~ soot-free/smoke-free
~ good for cuticles (the wax)
~ is easy to clean with warm, soapy water if the wax should spill.

This past weekend, the "Apple Orchard" and "Spiced Eggnog" Soy Scents candles provided an awesome aroma and relaxing ambience in my home. And, thankfully, it didn't cause any sneezing or such with my husband, which scents typically do to him!

While I had planned to get these Soy Scents candles all lit up after the weekend's house-cleaning, I decided to light them for inspiration prior to cleaning, and the aroma helped me to joyfully flow through the chores at hand. Then, on Monday, when I needed some inspiration for a time-consuming editing project, it was Soy Scents candles to the rescue again!

I also think it's quite cool that these wonderful candles are made right on site at Journey Cove, the very place where I teach stretching classes and attend dance classes. Because I have the "inside scoop" on this type of  candle and have been up close and personal with the process from start to finish, well, I just knew ZoeHygiea had to partner with Soy Scents by Life's Journey! Plus, I can keep an eye on the process for you, if you want a "relationship" with these candles, too! :-)

For more information, prices, and/or to place an order, please either send me a private message here or e-mail me at: zoehygiea@gmail.com. Your candle choices can even be delivered to you if you are in the Jacksonville, Florida area or SHIPPED to you if you live outside of this area.

If you'd like to get a whiff of these candles before purchasing Soy Scents for your home, office, and/or for family and friends, visit me at the "Journey Cove" booth at the Orange Avenue Baptist Church Fall Festival on Saturday, October 19, 2013 between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. The address is: 1106 N Orange Avenue, Green Cove Springs, FL 32043. And, Journey Cove's massage therapist will also be there giving chair-massage samples!

Candles AND Massage! Sounds like an ideal combo to me! :-)
